Making Mobile Broadband Faster
These days many users complaint that most mobile broadband service providers in Sri Lanka are becoming slower and slower. There are many possible reasons for a mobile broadband connection to transfer data at a low speed which is far below the designated speed.
This is a critical factor when considering the data transfer speeds. We have experienced high data transfer speeds such as 4 to 5 Mbps with 7.2 Mbps dongles but only 1 or below data transfer speeds with 3.6 Mbps dongles (checked using the same SIM cards while keeping all other factors constant including whether conditions). We always recommend using a dongle which is compatible with high speed data transmissions such as 7.2 Mbps or 14.4 Mbps.
Some devices reported lower data transfer speeds when they are heated while using for more than a number of hours.
Branded mobile phones including Sony Ericsson Xperia always reported high data transfer speeds other than the Chinese branded dongles such as Huawei or ZTE.
When it comes to UMTS or WCDMA, signal strength is a critical factor. Low signal strengths reduce the data transfer speed at a very high rate. If the signal strength is lower it causes the device to heat very quickly which again results the device to transfer data at a lower speed.
HSPA Only* Mode
It is recommended to keep your device at HSPA only mode if you are only using it to browse the internet. If the signal strength of the HSPA is lower than EDGE then there’s a high probability which the device selects the EDGE other than HSPA which results the data transfer speeds to go even below 10 to 15 kbps!
* HAPA only mode is similar to WCDMA only or UMTS only.
Speed check limit (For Dialog only)
To check whether you’ve exceeded the speed check limit type MBB and send to 678. You’ll be greeted with your usage statistics.
If you have already exceeded your monthly quota (the speed check limit) you can type 1MORE and send to 678. With this request Dialog allows the user to download 1 more gigabyte of data at the regular speed. You’ll be charged Rs.300 for this additional gigabyte. 5MORE to 678 will give you 5 more gigabytes for an additional rate of Rs.1,000.
*Dialog states even though the maximum speed is 3.6 Mbps the actual speed may differ and the average speed is 1 Mbps.
* The picture shows a Dialog mobile broadband speed test result when used with a 7.2 Mbps device (Sony Ericsson Xperia), with good signal strength in WCDMA only mode.
* The picture shows a Dialog mobile broadband speed test result when used with a 96 Mbps device, with good signal strength.
