How to Setup Dongle In Ubuntu

For most of the dongles available in the market there’s no graphical user interface for Linux operating system. If your Linux OS failed to automatically add your dongle use the instructions given below to add it to the system and to configure to browse internet using it.

First in the main top menu bar, select Edit Connections… by clicking the Network icon.

Select Mobile Broadband tab and click Add

Click Continue

Select Sri Lanka and click Continue

Select your service provider from the menu and click Continue

Select your plan. (don’t worry about this, we change it later manually as it is required. Select any) Click Continue

Now enter the APN. A list of 3G APNs for Sri Lanka is available here. Select your respective APN and set it here. Click Save

Your Mobile Broadband connection is successfully added and ready to use.

Connect it from the dropdown menu under Network icon on the top main menu bar.

Yes. This works with Aritel, Dialog, Etisalat, Hucth and Mobitel. But replace the details in screen shot 6 with the details in this post:
http://mobilebroadband.gishan.net/entry/..
For example, for Mobitel, replace dialogbb with mobitel3g
The default values set by Ubuntu wont do well.

@Dumindu:
Actually you don’t have to install anything. Follow the instruction above. Anyway to check for a specific software, tell us your dongle modal.

I got a solution.
1. I Created a folder in Desktop and named as “Mobitel”
2. Then I copied the content in the Dongle media to this folder.
3. Inside this folder there is a file named as “Linux”. I copied the content in this folder to the main “Mobitel” folder.
4. Opened a Terminal and logged in the root by “# sudo su “
5. Then moved to the “Mobitel” folder by “# cd /home//Desktop/Mobitel “
6. Then given the command “# sudo bash install “
7. Given “y” to the question asked in the prompt.

Mobitel Broadband software was installed. Now I can see the Text messages send by Mobitel. But the problem is that I cannot connect through this software. Only way to connect is by the way as you mentioned in this Article. When I click “Connect” a message come “Connection is Terminated”. Is there any way to come out through this ?

Like Dumindu says the problem is not getting to work the dongle on Ubuntu but how to get the Mobitel/Dialog/Etisalat/Airtel software to work.
Without the software you can’t send or receive messages which too is important when it comes to checking up on usage and extensions.

Anyway, I think a lot of newbies would’ve benefited from your post
